How to Choose a Small Gym Bag That Actually Fits Your Routine
The problem with most gym bags
Walk through any changing room and you will see the same thing. People wrestling oversized holdalls into lockers that were never going to take them, or giving up and leaving the bag on the bench where it sits in a puddle. The bag is twice the size of the kit inside it, because somewhere along the line we decided that a gym bag has to look like a kit bag for a rugby squad.
For the vast majority of people, a gym trip involves a change of clothes, a towel, a bottle, and whatever lives in your pockets. That is it. You are not carrying pads, boots and a first aid kit. How to choose the right size
The simplest test takes two minutes. Lay out everything you took to the gym last time. Fold it the way you would pack it. If the pile is smaller than a shoebox, a 7 litre bag is right. If it is noticeably bigger, size up.

Store it loosely rather than crushed under heavier luggage. Soft duffles hold their shape far longer when they are not permanently folded. Keep it away from direct heat and open flame, as you would with any synthetic bag.
Making it work harder
A few small habits turn a compact bag into a surprisingly capable one. Roll clothes instead of folding them, which both saves space and reduces creasing. Keep a thin microfibre towel in the bag permanently, since it takes a fraction of the room of a cotton one. Use the front pocket for the things you need before you open the main compartment, so you are not unpacking on a bench.
The base loop is there for items that will not fit inside, and the side pocket cords will hold a small item in place. Neither is a load-bearing solution, so keep what you hang light. Used sensibly, they add a little usable space without adding bulk.
